The FOUNDATION OF SAARC WRITERS AND LITERATURE gives tremendous
importance to its writers exchange programmes and believes that the visit
of writers from SAARC countries within other countries of the region will
promote an understanding of each other’s concerns through sharing of
information and experiences about the developments in language, literature
and writings in their respective countries . The exchange programme will
also help writers explore features of common heritage as well as age-old
historical, civilizational and cultural links.
The writers exchange programme has been progressing in two ways :
- Visits of writers from SAARC countries to India.
FOUNDATION OF SAARC WRITERS AND LITERATURE has welcomed several eminent
writers and poets in the last one year. In particular the visits by the
following writers need special mention.
- Visit by Ms Kishwar Naheed from Pakistan to discuss the modalities
of the next SAARC Writers Conference to be held in Pakistan.
- Visit by Mr. Mofidul Hoque of Bangladesh to discuss and plan for the
forthcoming programmes to be initiated by FOUNDATION OF SAARC WRITERS
AND LITERATURE and undertaken in collaboration with the Coordinating
Committee at Dhaka : Bangladesh Writers’ Forum.
- Visit by Mr. Tissa Abeysekara from Sri Lanka to discuss the
modalities of the SAARC Writers Conference to be held in Sri Lanka in
the beginning of 2002.
- Visit by Mr. Ahmed Faraz, Chairman, National Book Foundation of
Pakistan to discuss and finalize the modalities of the Conference to be
held in Pakistan in December, 2001
- Visits of writers and poets from SAARC countries to other countries
in the region.
As a result of the invitation, identification and introduction of SAARC
writers by FOUNDATION OF SAARC WRITERS AND LITERATURE , several writers
and poets of the region have received invitations for conferences,
seminars etc. by other organisations in the region. Noteworthy exchange of
writers which has taken place as a direct result of the initiatives of
FOUNDATION OF SAARC WRITERS AND LITERATURE are :
- Visit by Mr. Tulsi Diwasa of Nepal to New Delhi for a Literary
Conference.
- Mr. Parakrama Kodituwakku of Sri Lanka was invited to Kerala for a
literary conference by Mr. M. T. Vasudevan Nair. In fact Mr. Parakrama
was so overwhelmed at receiving the invitation that he told Ms. Ajeet
Cour, "You have opened the doors of India for us."
- Within a month of the conclusion of the Third SAARC Writers
Conference in Dhaka, Mr. Tissa Abeysekara of Sri Lanka was invited to
Dhaka by an organisation of intellectuals to speak on the dangers of
fundamentalism.
Thus, the initiatives undertaken by FOUNDATION OF SAARC WRITERS AND
LITERATURE have not only helped writers of the region to be recognised for
their creative writings but have also helped to ensure wide - ranging
participation of writers at various meetings, discussions and workshops
held in the region.
