SONIA GANDHI
President
ALL INDIA CONGRESS COMMITTEE.

I am delighted to learn that the Foundation of SAARC Writers and Literature is launching a journal which will represent the creative and literary gifts of writers from all seven SAARC countries.

There is a wealth of talent and ideas in the SAARC region, which is rich in cultural diversity as well as in its shared history and commonality of problems and perceptions. These have helped forge the ties that bind the SAARC countries-ties that will endure despite the political differences that may develop from time to time.

Indeed, I believe writers, artists, intellectuals and social activists can contribute enormously to strengthening understanding and solidarity between the SAARC countries, promoting democratic values, peace and tolerance in our region, and creating awareness about issues such as human rights, social justice, and the

environment. The journal Beyond Borders will, I am sure, provide a common platform to promote these ideals and encourage meaningful people-to-people contacts in the SAARC region.

I congratulate the Foundation of SAARC Writers and Literature for their initiative in bringing out the journal Beyond Borders and look forward to reading the first issue. I wish the journal all success and a wide readership.
